Dear Alumni,
This Board of Directors of Peking University Alumni Association of Southern
California (PUAASC) is about to complete its tenure. For the last two years,
we have gained tremendous support from all alumni in the greater Los Angeles
area in southern California and have made many progresses in many aspects. One
of such progresses was to establish a good communication channel with our Alma
Mater. For instance, we invited the new President of Peking University Prof. Xu
Zhihong to Los Angeles to co-host an important conference on the China-US
bilateral relation in February 2000. President Xu was then very impressive and
appreciative with our alumni's dedication to PKU by the following facts:
- Many alumni came to attend the conference and meetings with the President
from as far away as Arizona.
- Almost 50 alumni and their family members attended $100/seat conference
dinner banquet that demonstrated our unity and strength.
- Some alumni who were suffering critical diseases made long trips to come and
donated large amount of money for the courses of PKU.
Now President Xu and Vice President Min Weifang will lead a ten-person
delegation to visit Los Angeles again. This time, they will have another
important mission: To commemorate the founding of the new Peking University
Education Foundation (PKUED), USA. This foundation provides an opportunity
for PKU alumni in the US to make concrete contributions to our Alma Mater: to
maintain its top-ranking status in China, and to advance it to be a world-class
university in the near future. The continual success of PKU will have enormous
positive impact not only on ourselves, but also on our friends and even our
nation as a whole.
With the honor of hosting the PKU delegation as this Board's last mission, we
sincerely call upon all fellow alumni to join us, welcome the delegation and
contribute your time, ideas, and social skills to the good start of PKUED, USA.
President Xu Zhihong's travel itinerary in the USA is as follows:
- 4/14 (Sat) Los Angeles
- 4/15 (Sun) San Francisco
- 4/16 (Mon) Ceremony Banquet in San Francisco
- 4/17 (Tue) Philadelphia
- 4/19 (Thu) New York
- 4/20 (Fri) Ceremony Banquet in New York
- 4/21 (Sat) Washington D.C.
PUAASC President Xu Wenge had direct telephone contact with PKU and learned
that President Xu Zhihong and his associates would like to meet as many alumni
as possible this time to explain the mission of the foundation and seek their
support in the years ahead. He got the impression that the delegation will not
ask for alumni's immediate donation but any contribution will be highly
appreciated.
This board is actively working on the following tasks:
1. Organize a 30-person alumni delegation to attend the Foundation Ceremony
Banquet in San Francisco on 4/16.
This delegation is for those who have made contributions and actively
participated in the alumni events. Peking University will send individual
invitation letters to those who get the honor. PUAASC will start the initial
invitation process soon. Please respond promptly if you have received the
invitation by e-mail or by phone. Please also let us know if you are interested
by e-mailing to sikun@yahoo.com.
2. Arrange an alumni meeting with President Xu and Vice President Min on 4/14.
We will announce as early as possible when the time and location is determined.
Please kindly reserve the afternoon and evening of that Saturday for this
event.
3. Contact companies and individuals who are not PKU alumni and invite them to
make contributions to PKUED, USA. We are preparing the materials and
fund-raising teams. Please kindly air any relevant information and your
suggestions to BDboard@listbot.com.
Together, we can and are turning a new page in the history of Peking University
regarding its financial strength.
Best regards,
PUAASC, Board of Directors
