News Release: Peking University Alumni Association of Southern California

(PUAASC), a Los Angeles based IRS approved 501(c)(3) non-profit organization of

over 500 Peking University Alumni, held a bi-annual election of its Board of

Directors (BOD) and Executive Committee (EC) on December 14, 2003 in the City

of Beverly Hills. Dr. Yanan Jenny Luo was elected as the next PUAASC President.

"This was the first time in the association's 18-year history that candidates

must compete for limited voluntary positions", said Dr. Sikun Lan, the current

President, whose two-year term will expire on December 31, 2003 and who did not

seek a reelection.

The Executive Committee consists of one President and four Vice Presidents. Two

candidate teams of five persons each competed to become the 2004-2005 EC. The

campaign lasted near two months. Each team in their professional dresses gave a

20-minute presentation using projected slides in front of the voting members.

"We have developed good teamwork in these two months", the President-elected

Dr. Luo talked about her winning team. She graduated from Department of Biology

in Peking University in 1988. She obtained her Ph.D. from University of

Southern California (USC), Los Angeles. She currently works as a Patent Agent

for a Los Angeles big law firm. Her team of Vice Presidents includes Dr. Zhimin

Zhou, who graduated from Peking University with an Electrical Engineering

Bachelor's Degree in 1986 and is now working as a Project Manager at a large

semi-conductor company in Irvine; Dr. Kewei Gong, a Postdoctoral who earned his

medical degree from Peking University Medical School (i.e., formerly Beijing

Medical University) in 1994; Ms. Hongmei Li, who had a Bachelor's Degree in

English from Peking University in 1997 and now a Ph.D. Candidate at Annenberg

School for Communication, USC; and Mr. Lei Feng, a Ph.D. Candidate who held a

Bachelor's and a Master's Degree in Electric Engineering from Peking University

in 1999.

"The other team is also very strong and the team members have some great ideas

that we will include in our plan. I will personally invite all its members to

join us to make our association better and stronger so that we can better serve

our alumni and provide resources for the development of our Alma Mater", Luo

spoke in a consolatory tone. Both teams' plans included academic seminars,

personal networking, job referral, introducing career opportunities in China,

sports and entertainment, and fundraising for Peking University.

According to the PUAASC Bylaws, the Executive Committee manages the

Association's daily activities and reports to the 12-member Board of Directors.

Half of the BOD positions were reelected on the same day. Among the thirteen

candidates, Z. Julie Gao, Sikun Lan, Hongmei Li, Yanan Jenny Luo, Wenge Bryan

Xu, and John Jianzhong Zhang were elected into the BOD. Dr. Richard Lee, a

prominent business leader in the Chinese American community who had a Peking

University economics degree, was elected as the Board Chairman. "The Board will

provide legal, policy, community connection, and sometimes financial support

for the success of the Executive Committee", Lee said.
