Dear CSSA members,

We are very sorry to inform you that our fellow member, Mr. Luo Zheng,

passed away on July 28, 2004, at the young age of 35. Luo was a staff

researcher in Department of Neurology, UCLA school of Medicine. He

suffered from a sudden unknown disease and left only after a couple of

days.

Luo was born in Nanchang, Jiangxi Province. He graduated from

Zhejiang University in 1991 with a BS degree in Biological Sciences

& Technology, and obtained his MS degree in Cell Biology from Peking

University in 1995. He came to US in 1996 and obtained a MS degree in

Molecular Medicine from University of Texas Health Science Center in

1999. Since then he worked in the Department of Neurology of UCLA with Dr

Daniel H Geschwind.

On Sunday, July 24th, Luo experienced fever-like symptoms, and was

sent to Brotman Medical Center in Culver City the next day. The disease

was so aggressive and acute, and he was lost on the morning of July 28th.

The cause of the death is still under investigation.

The loss of Luo is an unbearable shock to all that know him -- He was so

young; he was still working on the previous Friday and hailing his

colleagues in the Reed Building, and he was still making phone calls to

his parents in China on that Sunday. It broke our hearts to realize that

these all became our last pieces of memory of him, and the last words

from him.

Life is so fragile sometimes. We can hardly bear the sorrow and pain of

losing a good friend and a wonderful colleague, and we can imagine what a

overwhelming shock it is to his family in China. Luo Zheng has no family

members or relatives in the United States. His aged parents and his

brother were all heart-broken when they heard the tragic news. They

want to see his face one last time, but as a family with average income,

they are having financial difficulties to handle the travel and

funeral related expenses.

As CSSA members, we share the same feelings of Luo Zheng's family, and we

want to help them as much as we could. Therefore, CSSA-UCLA is calling

for donations from our Chinese community. The fund raised will be used

for the expenses of Luo's family's travel, as well as the funeral. The

rest of the donation, if any, will be passed to Luo Zheng's family.

On behalf of all CSSA members, CSSA will donate $100 to Luo's family.

To make your personal donation, please make your check payable to

"CSSA-UCLA", and make note "For Luo Zheng" on the check. Please send the

check to the following address:
