Event: trip to Miramar Air Show in San Diego

Time: Oct. 15, 2005

The USC CSSA hiking club is organizing a trip to the Miramar Air Show in San Diego this Saturday, Oct. 15. The trip is also open to all PUAASC members and other Chinese and their friends in Southern California.

This annual Air Show (http://www.miramarairshow.com/is one of the best air shows in the United States and it is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this year. The show features both static display and live air performance. On display are close to one hundred civilian and military aircrafts, including F-117 Nighthawk, F-18F Super Hornet, F-16 Falcon, B-52 StratoFortress, C-5A Galaxy, RQ-1 Predator, A-10 Thunderbolt, etc. Live performance includes vertical take-off and landing of AV-8B, B-2 Stealth Bomber, F-117 Stealth Fighter, U.S. Navy Parachute Team, and most important above, the world famous Blue Angels team. The air show is free and open to the public. Cameras are allowed inside the show.

After watching the air show, we will also go to the nearby coastal city of La Jolla for a short tour. We will visit Ellen Browning Scripps Park, which overlooks La Jolla Cove where clear Pacific water crashes against the rocky shoreline of La Jolla Cove. Other local attractions include the Children's Pool Beach, where you can see live seals. Photos of previous trips can be found at the hiking club web page at http://netweb.usc.edu/xinming/photos/miramar_airshow_2004/index.html

Our tentative plan is to depart from 2671 Magnolia Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90007 by 7:30am. Then we will go to Miramar Marine Corps Air Station in San Diego. The driving direction from USC is to follow I-110 South for 10 miles, then I-405 South for 27 miles, I-5 South for 55 miles, I-805 South for 2.4 miles, and then go east along Miramar Road for about 3 miles. You will see the west entrance of the Miramar Marine Corps Air Station on your right side. Follow the sign to park inside the base. All large backpacks should be kept in the car trunk. You can only carry small bags when you walk through the screening gate.

Both parking and admission are free. However, it is recommended to buy a grandstand ticket for best view with a seat. The ticket is on sale at http://www.miramarairshow.comfor $8 (Saturday Matinee 9:30am to 4:00pm), or $10 purchased at the show. You can buy the ticket online after your carpool seat has been confirmed.

After the show, we go to the Ellen Browning Scripps Park at 4:00pm. The address is 933 Coast Blvd, La Jolla, CA 92037. Direction is to go west along Miramar Road for 3 miles, continue on La Jolla Village DR for 3 miles, turn left into Torrey Pines RD for 3 miles, turn right into Prospect PL for 0.2 mile, turn right into Coast Blvd for 0.6 mile. You can park your car in the local street. We will gather there around 5:00pm, and stay there for about 1.5 hours. We will return around 6:30pm.

If you are interested in joining the trip, please send me an email at xhe@usc.edu for reservation. Please let me know your name, phone number, if you need a carpool seat or can provide carpool seats to other people (and how many seats are available in your car). The cost for carpool will be shared among participants (around $10 per person, give to the driver directly). If you have any question, please feel free to contact me.
