posted on Dec 16 2005

Dear alumni,

We have received a petition (with modifications) for a memorial fund for Zhen

Ye, a PKU alumnus. Please find 3 documents that describe the initiation of

motion and Zhen Ye’s daughter’s medical information at the following URLs:

...

As you can find from these documents, Dr. Zhen Ye was born in Beijing, China,

on January 22, 1963. On December 1, 2004, he died of cancer in Victoria,

British Columbia, at the age of 41. Zhen entered the Peking University at age

the of 17. After obtaining the degree of Bachelor of Science in Biology in

1984, he became a graduate student in the Department of Physics, Fudan

University, Shanghai, and began his lifelong pursuit of physics. In 1986, Zhen

came to Canada to continue his graduate studies in the Physics Department,

University of Alberta, Edmonton. He obtained his Ph.D. degree in 1991. In the

following two years, he was a post-doctoral research fellow at the University

of Ottawa. Starting from 1994, he worked as a research scientist at the

Institute of Ocean Sciences, Sidney, British Columbia, for four years. Zhen’s

academic teaching career started in 1997, when he joined the faculty of the

Physics Department, National Central University in Taiwan. Here he supervised

many graduate students and post-doctoral fellows and taught many courses in

theoretical physics. Professor Dr. Zhen Ye made a number of outstanding

contributions in several fields of physics and was known to be an extremely

devoted scientist and teacher. Zhen Ye had two daughters (Maggie, 15 and

Pattie, 6). As it is about one year Zhen Ye passed away. We initiate a motion

to collect donations for a big Christmas gift for Ye Zhen's family. We did it

last year. During the conversation with Zhen Ye’s wife Wendy Yao, we just found

that there is another tragedy in her family. Earlier this year, Maggie (The

elder one of the two daughters. She is 15) was diagnosed to have lupus (In

Chinese, it is Hong-Ban-Lang-Chuang). An autoimmune disease. Lupus triggered

GBS (Something like Gary Berlin Syndrome) in Maggie, and she was on respirator

for some time. Maggie was hospitalized for three months. During that time,

Wendy took care of her while Ye Zhen's parents took care of their 6-years old

younger daughter. The good news is that Maggie has almost completely recovered,

under hormone control, and has already returned back to School. But

unfortunately, there is currently no cure for this disease, and thus, it is

likely that Maggie will be under hormone therapy for the rest of her life.

I think that Zhen Ye is an outstanding alumni and his family is facing some big

challenges now. It will be very helpful for us to set up a Memorial Fund for

Zhen Ye through PUAASC.

Your helps will be highly appreciated.
