Business Operations Manager — Shanghai

IDEO is seeking a Business Operations Manager, based in its Shanghai office, and reporting to the Shanghai Location Head. We’re growing our business in China and need an entrepreneurial, highly motivated business leader to help build business operations from the ground up, in collaboration with local and global leadership. We need a strong system thinker with the ability to use a complex set of data as the basis for making sound business decisions. Specific responsibilities include:

· Implement internal business & financial processes consistent with the rest of the organization. Oversee the execution of these processes within our Shanghai office, including full cycle accounting.

· Build and manage a capable, flexible and committed support team.

· Ensure that the business is compliant locally while serving the best interests of IDEO globally.

· Evaluate proposed and active projects to reduce different risks related to execution and management of scope of work, i.e. project feasibility, P&L, IP.

· Develop and maintain highly productive, strategic relationships with partners and vendors, including tax and other local business consultants.

· Communicate location financial operations and prepare necessary reports conveying the state of the business on a regular basis.

· Work with and support project teams to achieve financial objectives.

The ideal candidate can demonstrate the following:

· Experience working with creative people in a project planning capacity.

· Experience in a creative consultancy or/and experience in a multinational corporation.

· Experience building a start-up business from scratch.

· Ability to engage with designers and help them look at things through a business lens.

· Ability to synthesize aggregated knowledge, both financial and anecdotal, into a point of view and express it effectively.

· Ability to build and nurture relationships across multiple networks using collaborative and empathic skills.

· Comfort level in ambiguous, start-up like environments. Passion for business and operations.

· Strong logistical skills and exemplary time management/organizational skills.

· Excellent discretion­, demonstrating sound judgment in dealing with confidential dialogues and information.

Minimum requirements:

· 5+ progressive experience in an operations or project management capacity.

· Strong understanding of local laws, local business practices, and well connected with local resources.

· Experience managing a small team of 3-5.

· Bachelor’s degree in Business, Finance, or related subject.

· Strong Mandarin and English verbal and written skills; Shanghainese a plus.
