SCMJ MONTHLY FORUM ABSTRACT

In President Obama's address to Congress on Feb 24, 2009, he said:

"We know that the country that harness the powerof clean, renewable energy will lead the 21st century."

It clearly states the importance of Renewable and Clean Energy for the next two to three decades, and many countries including China , Japan , Germany , Spain , and Italy are focusing on this topic and other clean technologies like the smart grid and green transportation. What is clean /green technology and what does it encompass?

"Clean Technology" is " a diverse range of products, services, and processes that harness renewable materials and energy sources, dramatically reduce the use of natural resources, and cut or eliminate emissions and wastes."

Clean Technology includes renewable energy (7 kinds): solar power, wind power, bio-energy, hydropower, wave, tidal, and geothermal; and smart grid, hybrid- and all-electric vehicles, advanced batteries, green buildings, lighting, water filtration, etc.

Dr. Kao will present current development and recent trends in Solar Thin Film PV technology (A-Si, CdTe, CIGS) , large scale solar thermal (trough, dish, tower), wind turbines, biofuel (ethanol, biodiesel, oilgae) , and future wave and tidal energy, hybrid energy islands, space solar power, nanotechnology driven solar and bio energy, new batteries, etc.

He will also discuss some technical and financial challenges ahead as well as new business opportunities in various clean /green technology areas.

DR. WILLIAM KAO'S BIO

Dr. William Kao received his BSEE, MSEE and PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign . He has worked in the Semiconductor and Electronic Design Automation industries for 30 years holding senior and executive engineering management positions at Texas Instruments, Xerox Corporation, and Cadence Design Systems.

Dr. Kao has authored more than 40 technical papers and holds several software and IC patents. He was an Adjunct Professor at UCLA Electrical Engineering Department where he taught courses in computer aided circuit design. Dr. Kao is a Senior Member of IEEE, and was Chair of the Circuits and Systems Chapter in Silicon Valley in 2006.

Dr. Kao currently teaches Renewable Energy and Business Sustainability courses at UC Santa Cruz Silicon Valley Extension, and at the Clean Tech and Nano Technology Institute in San Jose . He is also on the Technical Advisory Board for Sigma Quest on the topics of Energy and Environment, and Quality Control, and is a consultant for several Clean Tech VC firms.

3) Song-Zhu-Mei picnic, 10/10/2009

Dear Alumni and Friends,

Since the first Song-Zhu-Mei picnic in 2002, it has been a tradition carried out by alumni associations of Peking University, Tsinghua University and Chiao Tung/Jiao Tong University. The eighth Song-Zhu-Mei Picnic will be held on Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Mason Park in Irvine.

The 2009 Song-Zhu-Mei Picnic is coordinated by Chiao Tung/Jiao Tong University Alumni Association of Southern California and is participated by many other alumni associations and organizations.

Buffet style lunch will be served at the picnic. There will be a lot of fun games, raffle prize drawing, and the tuck-of-war competitions.
