Overview: INVISIBLE KILLER is a thrilling detective story, a murder mystery without a killer. All of China is on the hunt for computer geek, Gao Fei, who may or may not be wrongfully accused after having a scandalous affair with a married woman he met through an online game. The film was inspired by the true events of China’s “human flesh search engine" phenomenon and conveys a compelling social message. Showcasing modern China like you’ve never seen it before INVISIBLE KILLER appeals to both gamers and Internet-enthusiasts in addition to those intrigued by a more authentic portrayal of life in today’s China.

Synopsis: Based on true events, INVISIBLE KILLER tells the story of Gao Fei (Yin Xiaotian) and Lin Yan (Tang Yan), two star-crossed lovers who encounter disastrous repercussions when their love affair is made public on the Internet.

After meeting at a convention for players of World of Warcraft, Gao Fei and Lin Yan shed their online identities, “Iron Buddha” and “Autumn’s Fallen Flowers,” and begin a clandestine relationship. When Lin Yan’s husband becomes aware of her infidelities, he posts to an online forum demanding to know the true identity of the “Iron Buddha” and calling for his destruction.

The posting sparks a Human Flesh Search Engine (a uniquely-Chinese style of internet-fueled vigilante justice), or irate mob of Internet users intent on punishing Gao Fei and Lin Yan for their transgressions. With nowhere to hide, Gao Fei and Lin Yan find themselves “internet fugitives” and their lives in pieces, as the worlds of online gaming and violence bleed over to real acts of terrorism and murder.

When wily, determined cop Zhang Yao (Feng Bo) encounters Gao Fei, she finds herself at the center of a new kind of crime. Determined to crack the case, Zhang Yao soon realizes that the world of Internet crime evades traditional law enforcement and reveals more questions than answers. Can Zhang Yao trace the invisible killer and untangle the World Wide Web? In a world where the fantasy of online life and brutal reality of real life have become hopelessly muddled, where is true justice to be found?

Set in the quiet portside city of Yangshen, INVISIBLE KILLER provides a window to the drama of life in modern China. From misplaced passions to Internet subcultures, from tough cops to witless paparazzi, INVISIBLE KILLER reveals a slice of a culture in transition—the Real China, where the truth lies.
