Sa Chen is hitherto the only Chinese pianist winning prizes in both the Leeds
Piano Competition in the U.K. and the Chopin International Piano Competition in
Poland - two most important competitions of the kind, who also shared with
compatriot Yundi Li the prize for the Best Polonaise Performance in the latter.
Based in Beijing, China Philharmonic Orchestra (CPO) is among the finest
ensembles in Asia. The orchestra consists of the best musicians one can find
in China as well as a number of superb players recruited overseas. Through
stringent and professional management, CPO has firmly established itself as an
organisation to set new standards of excellence in orchestral music in China.
CPO came to its existence by restructuring of the former Chinese Broadcasting
Symphony Orchestra which was one of the earliest orchestra in China and had
contributed significantly in the Chinese musical scene through collaborations
with many renownd musicians like Mikhail Pletnev, Klaus Weise, Gehard Poulet,
En Shao, Placido Domingo, Kallen Esperian and etc. The orchestra had made
highly successful tours to Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Spain, Austria, Hong
Kong and Taiwan, receiving critical acclaims from the media and audience there.
In November 2001, CPO recorded two albums for the famous record company
Deutsche Grammophon. The first disc features Wagner's Overture to Tannhäuser
and Schoenburg's orchestral arrangement of Brahms' Piano Quartet in G minor,
the second disc is a collection of Chinese orchestral music. This is the first
time in the one-hundred-year history of Deutsche Grammophon to record a Chinese
orchestra and release their discs world-wide.
