On August 7, 2002, on the way to the summit of the 23,924-foot Xifeng Peak on
the Himalayas, a major avalanche unfortunately devoured the five ascending
student climbers from Peking University Mountaineering Association (PUMA),
China. This was the second strike for PUMA, when earlier a female climber lost
her life in an accidental slip climbing Mt. Xuebaoding in 1999.
As former members of the association which is also known as the Eagles Society,
we understand their love for the mountains and for climbing from the depths of
our hearts, and are sincerely sorry for our sister's and brothers' families.
While feeling powerless in relieving their inconsolable grief, we believe we
can otherwise help their parents by reducing their losses financially. As most
of the families are farmers who are excluded from the current social security
system in China, their children had been their main hope of old age and illness
care. Therefore, after careful researches and discussions, we decided to raise
a fund for the families with which money we will buy them retirement and
medical insurances.
Many of you have sent your condolence and expressed your desire to contribute.
We appreciate your thoughtfulness. To provide a formal but easy channel for
donating from the U.S., we partnered with Peking University Education Fund
(PKUEF USA) to collect the funds. Please read the links below if you wish to
donate for the cause of supporting these families. A report on fund
distribution will be sent to you by email and posted at
http://cse.unl.edu/~ylei/donation.
Thank you for your charity.
May the souls rest peacefully in Heaven!
